Simulated patients (SP) are good individuals who are trained to portray patients, usually with the intent of supporting the development of communication and other skills among health professionals. Through didactic and discussion activities, participants will be guided through key elements of SP methodology. We will discuss ways to involve SPs in all phases of simulation to optimise their involvement. We will explore the diverse practices of SPs and the specific value of their work. Participants will be invited to think about their own practices and how SPs may contribute. In a practical activity, they will be invited to take on an SP role to experience one approach to training for role portrayal. The workshop finishes with a guide to resources supporting SP methodology.
